What specific kind of righteous deed is Allah demanding from us to validate our faith? To understand.
(The First Khutbah)

As-salamu Alaikum Wa Rahmatullahi Wa Barakatuh.
My dear brothers and sisters, let us stand face-to-face today and examine an unsettling flaw that corrupts the interactions of our modern global Ummah. We live in a world that has completely commercialized the concept of righteousness. We treat faith as if it were a checklist of external performances. We measure a person’s status with Allah by how long their beard is, how perfectly they wrap their hijab, how many times they have traveled for Umrah, or how eloquently they can debate religious history on social media platforms. We have become masters at dressing up our bodies for the gaze of people, but we are completely blind to the rot settling deep within our character.
The tragedy of our time is that we have separated ritual worship from everyday moral execution. You will see a man standing in the very first row of the masjid for the congregational prayers, weeping during the supplication, but the moment he steps out into his office, he cheats his business partners, lies to his clients, and cuts off his family members over a minor financial dispute. You will find people who can recite the Quran beautifully, yet their tongues are dripping with venom, slander, and harsh judgment against anyone who makes a mistake or disagrees with their opinion. We have forgotten that an empty ritual devoid of justice and deep spiritual integrity is a shell that holds zero weight in the scales of eternity.
But Allah, the Knower of the secrets, tears down this superficial definition of piety. He establishes a profound, cosmic law that bridges your spiritual connection with your real-world ethics, defining exactly what it takes to unlock His eternal protection.
Turn your hearts to the ultimate blueprint of divine reward. Listen to this unshakeable promise found in Surah Al-Ma'idah (5:9):
“Allah has promised those who believe and do righteous deeds that for them there is forgiveness and a great reward.”
Let these words settle into the absolute core of your consciousness today. Look at the language Allah uses here: Wa'ada Allahu—"Allah has promised." This is an absolute, ironclad guarantee from the Lord of the heavens and the earth. Human beings break their promises all the time; they run out of resources, they change their minds, or they pass away before they can deliver. But when the Owner of the universe writes a promise, the entire creation could assemble to block it, and they would fail miserably. The delivery is a cosmic certainty.
But look carefully at the two non-negotiable conditions attached to this divine guarantee: alladhina amanu wa'amilus-salihat—"those who believe and actively perform righteous deeds."
Notice the perfect harmony here. Allah does not say the promise is for those who just believe in their minds while their actions are toxic. He doesn't say it is for those who do good humanistic deeds while rejecting the Creator. True faith (Iman) is the silent root beneath the soil, but righteous deeds (As-Salihat) are the visible fruits growing on the branches! If you claim to have a strong root but your tree produces nothing but thorns, bitterness, and injustice to the people around you, then your root is a dead lie. Righteousness is the physical manifestation of your internal submission.
To help everyone sitting here truly comprehend this psychological reality, let us look at an original analogy from our daily lives. Imagine a desperate man who falls severely ill with a dangerous, fast-acting bacterial infection. He rushes to the hospital and meets the most elite chief physician in the city. The physician conducts tests and hands him a small bottle of highly advanced, life-saving antibiotic pills, saying: "Take one capsule every twelve hours for the next seven days. This medicine is guaranteed to destroy the infection and save your life."
The man takes the bottle, returns home, and places it on the highest, most decorated shelf in his living room. He wraps the bottle in a beautiful piece of velvet cloth. Every morning when he wakes up, he kisses the bottle, plays soft music around it, and tells his neighbors, "I have absolute faith in this physician! I believe this medicine is the greatest cure on earth. I talk about it every single day!" But he never opens the bottle. He never swallows a single capsule. He lets the medicine sit on the shelf while the infection aggressively spreads through his blood. Within a week, the man collapses and perishes.
Tell me, did his verbal praise save him? Did his mental belief in the doctor cure him? Absolute no! His refusal to internalize and execute the prescription caused his total destruction.
My dear congregation, that bottle of medicine is the Holy Quran, and those life-saving capsules are the righteous deeds commanded by your Master! The tragedy of our modern Ummah is that we are kissing the bottle while our characters are dying from the infection of the world! We put the Quran on our shelves, we play it beautifully in our cars, we talk about how much we love Islam on our social media profiles, but we keep the medicine turned off when it comes to our actual behavior! We don't swallow the capsules of patience, we don't implement the capsules of honest financial dealings, and we don't practice the capsules of mercy toward our families. We are drowning in spiritual hypocrisy, pretending we are cured just because we own the prescription.
Allah reveals the two ultimate rewards for those who actually take the medicine: lahum maghfiratun wa-ajrun 'adheem—"for them there is forgiveness and a great reward."
Notice the divine sequence. Allah grants Maghfirah (forgiveness) first, because your slate must be wiped completely clean of past sins and systemic errors before you can receive the premium blessings of the kingdom. Once the obstacles are cleared, He floods your life with an Ajrun 'Adheem—a reward so massive, so grand, and so infinite that no human vocabulary can ever measure its scale.
Let us leave this first part of our sermon by auditing our consistency. Stop hiding behind your empty religious labels. Step out of your complacency, open the ledger of your daily actions, and start swallowing the medicine of pure, uncompromised righteousness before your clock runs out.
(The Second Khutbah)
My dear brothers and sisters, welcome back your hearts to this reminder. We must ask ourselves with absolute practical urgency: What specific kind of righteous deed is Allah demanding from us to validate our faith? To understand what lies at the heart of As-Salihat, we do not have to look far. We only have to look at the exact verse that comes right before our primary ayah in Surah Al-Ma'idah. Listen to the heavy, uncompromising standard of justice that Allah establishes for our daily character in Surah Al-Ma'idah (5:8):
"O you who have believed, be persistently standing firm for Allah, witnesses in justice, and do not let the hatred of a people prevent you from being just. Be just; that is nearer to righteousness. And fear Allah; indeed, Allah is All-Aware of what you do."
Look at the psychological mountain Allah commands us to climb! He says: wa-la yajrimannakum shana'anu qawmin 'ala alla ta'dilu—"Do not ever let your hatred, your personal anger, your political grudges, or your cultural biases against any group or individual cause you to slip into injustice."
It is incredibly easy to be fair and kind to the people who look like you, agree with you, and support your career. Anyone can do that. But the true test of your Iman, the authentic measure of your righteous character, is how you treat the person who has wronged you, the person who holds a different opinion, or the business competitor you dislike. If you allow your personal anger to make you lie about them, backbite them, or deny them their basic human rights, then your faith has failed the test. Allah says: I'dilu huwa aqrabu lit-taqwa—"Be absolutely just to everyone, because true justice is the closest neighbor to God-consciousness."
To show you how this absolute commitment to moral integrity re-wires your status in the Hereafter, listen to this beautiful, eye-opening authentic Hadith that details the primary target of Allah's gaze. The Prophet Muhammad ﷺ said:
"Indeed, Allah does not look at your physical appearances or your worldly wealth, but He looks directly into your hearts and your active deeds." (Sahih Muslim).
SubhanAllah! Let that Hadith destroy your spiritual pride today. Think about the clarity of this divine filter. When your record is presented on the Day of Judgment, Allah will not check the luxury brand of the clothes you wore, the size of your house, the status of your family name, or how many followers you accumulated on your digital screens. He completely bypasses the superficial exterior!
His gaze pierces straight through the facade to evaluate two things: the purity of your heart and the value of your deeds. Did you pray purely for Him, or did you do it to look pious in front of the community? Did you treat your workers with absolute fairness when no authority was watching you? Did you clean your heart of malice, jealousy, and arrogance before you stepped into the masjid?
Let us completely change our trajectory before we stand up to establish the prayers today. We must rescue our faith from the graveyard of empty words. When you walk out of the doors of this sanctuary and return to your offices, your local marketplaces, and your families, let Surah Al-Ma'idah rewrite your actions.
Clean up your secret intentions. If you have taken money that does not belong to you through a deceptive deal, return it today. If you have been speaking harshly to your spouse or ignoring your parents, go to them and beg for their forgiveness before the sun sets. Stand as a beacon of uncompromised justice on this earth. Take the medicine of consistent, honest, and sincere righteous deeds. Live every single hour under the glorious guarantee of verse 9, show Allah that your submission is real, and watch how He floods your life with His absolute Maghfirah and deposits your soul into the boundless oceans of His Ajrun 'Adheem.
