To ensure that no human being ever wastes their lifetime searching for peace in the wrong places, Allah seals the law with a powerful linguistic tool

(The First Khutbah)

  • By Ibrahim Aweda Abdulrahmon
As-salamu Alaikum Wa Rahmatullahi Wa Barakatuh.
My dear brothers and sisters, look me in the eyes today and answer a question that haunts the modern human being: Why is humanity so deeply restless? We live in an era of unprecedented comfort. We have engineered climate-controlled homes, instant communication, advanced medicine, and entertainment systems that can distract our minds at any second of the day. By all material standards, we should be the happiest, most tranquil generation to ever walk the earth.
Yet, the exact opposite is true. If you look closely at the faces of people on the streets, in your workplaces, or even inside your own homes, you see an epidemic of inner chaos. People are drowning in chronic anxiety, burning with silent depression, and constantly chasing the next worldly milestone just to numb a persistent, heavy ache inside their chests. We try to cure this restlessness by acquiring more wealth, changing our outfits, moving to new cities, or scrolling endlessly through social media feeds, hoping that the next hit of dopamine will finally settle our nerves. But the moment the noise stops and the night falls, the emptiness returns.
We are trying to cure a spiritual disease with material objects, completely ignoring the anatomy of the human soul. Our Creator, the One who manufactured the intricate layers of your heart and knows exactly what frequency it runs on, shatters all our worldly experimentation with a single, beautiful, and absolute psychological law.
Turn your hearts to the ultimate manual of inner peace. Listen to this definitive declaration found in Surah Ar-Ra'd (13:28)
“Those who believe and whose hearts find rest in the remembrance of Allah. Unquestionably, by the remembrance of Allah do hearts find rest.”
Let these words sink into the deepest chambers of your mind today. Look at the structural finality of this verse. Allah starts by identifying the people of true security: Alladhina amanu watatma-innu quloobuhum bi-dhikrillah—"Those who believe and whose hearts find calm, stability, and rest in the remembrance of Allah."
And then, to ensure that no human being ever wastes their lifetime searching for peace in the wrong places, Allah seals the law with a powerful linguistic tool: Ala bi-dhikrillahi tatma-innul-quloob—"Unquestionably, by the remembrance of Allah do hearts find rest."
The word Ala is a wake-up call. It means: Pay attention! Listen closely! Do not be deceived! Allah is establishing a cosmic rule that cannot be bypassed. The human heart was created with a specific lock, and the only key that can ever fit that lock is Dhikrullah—the active remembrance, connection, and submission to the Almighty. If you try to force the key of money, the key of relationships, or the key of status into that lock, you will break the mechanism and damage your soul.
To help everyone sitting here truly comprehend this divine design, let us look at an analogy from our daily lives. Imagine a highly sophisticated, high-performance sports car engineered by the finest technicians in the world. In the owner's manual, the engineers write a strict, non-negotiable instruction: "This engine is manufactured to run exclusively on premium, high-grade fuel. Do not under any circumstances fill the tank with anything else."
Now, imagine if the owner of this car decides he knows better. He looks at a bucket of dirty, stagnant water from a nearby swamp or a jug of cheap syrup and says, "Well, it’s a liquid, and it’s much cheaper than premium fuel. Let me pour this into the tank instead." What happens the moment he turns the key? The engine coughs, smokes, chokes, and breaks down completely. The car cannot move. It doesn't matter how beautiful the paint job is, how expensive the leather seats are, or how loudly the owner yells at the dashboard—the car is ruined because it was fed something completely incompatible with its design.
My dear congregation, your physical body is the frame of that car, but your heart is the engine! And the fuel that your engine requires to run smoothly is the remembrance of your Master. Eleven months of chasing the Dunya, obsessing over bills, and feeding our minds with the toxic updates of the world is like pouring dirty swamp water directly into our spiritual fuel tanks! Our anxiety, our panic attacks, and our constant emotional crashes are simply the symptoms of a starving heart screaming for its authentic fuel.
When you sit down to remember Allah, when you stand in sincere prayer, or when you internalize His verses, you are finally giving your soul the premium fuel it was manufactured to breathe.
Let us leave this first part of our sermon by checking our spiritual alignment. Stop looking at your material shortages as the cause of your sadness. True tranquility is not a financial status; it is a spiritual connection. Run to the remembrance of the One who holds your peace, and watch how the internal storms of your life dissolve into absolute stillness.

(The Second Khutbah)
My dear brothers and sisters, welcome back your hearts to this urgent reminder. We must ask ourselves practically: What does it mean to establish Dhikrullah in a way that actually transforms our mental and emotional state? Remembrance is not just a passive, mechanical movement of the tongue while your mind is wandering through your business deals or your social media notifications. True remembrance is when your heart aligns with your tongue, and you become fully conscious of the presence of Allah.
To understand the immense power of a heart anchored in this state, listen to this beautiful and authentic Hadith that establishes the sheer magnitude of spiritual engagement. The Prophet Muhammad ﷺ said:
"The analogy of the one who remembers his Lord in comparison to the one who does not remember his Lord is like that of the living and the dead." (Sahih al-Bukhari).
SubhanAllah! Look at how the Prophet ﷺ diagnoses the human condition. He does not categorize people by their bank accounts, their lineage, or their physical strength. He draws a line between the spiritually alive and the walking corpses! You could have a person whose body is perfectly healthy, whose pockets are full of gold, and who is laughing at every party, but because their tongue and heart are dry from the remembrance of Allah, they are dead inside a moving shell. On the flip side, you could have a believer facing severe poverty, physical sickness, or immense worldly pressure, yet their soul is vibrant, alive, and radiantly peaceful because they are constantly plugged into the source of life through Dhikr.
To expand our vision on how to achieve this, turn your attention to a supporting verse where Allah explains the shield that this remembrance provides against the ultimate source of anxiety—Shaitan. Allah says in Surah Az-zukhruf (43:36).
"And whoever turns away from the remembrance of the Most Merciful - We appoint for him a devil, and he is to him a companion."
Look at the psychological reality! When you empty your mind of Dhikr, you leave the doors of your heart completely unlocked. Shaitan steps in as a permanent companion, constantly whispering doubts, magnifying your fears, making you paranoid about your future financial provision, and blowing your family arguments out of proportion. The absence of Allah's remembrance automatically invites the presence of chaotic whispers.
Let us reclaim our minds today before we walk out of this sanctuary. We must build practical habits of Dhikr into our daily schedules. When you wake up, don't let the first act of your day be looking at human opinions on your phone; let your first words be the praise of the One who gave you life. When you drive your car or walk to your shop, don't leave your mind empty to stress; let your tongue repeat the pure phrases of SubhanAllah, Alhamdulillah, and La ilaha illallah.
Make the Quran your daily companion, even if it is just one page read with deep contemplation before you sleep. When the global news terrifies you or personal trials weigh you down, drop to your knees, call upon the Most Merciful by His beautiful names, and let the unshakeable truth of Surah Ar-Ra'd settle your pulse.
We pray to Allah to revive our hearts from spiritual death, to purify our tongues with His beautiful remembrance, and to grant our souls that ultimate, unshakeable tranquility that carries us safely through the trials of this world until we enter the gates of His eternal peace.
